Check the route before booking a Red Light District guided tour: Amsterdam prohibits guided tours past sex workers’ windows, including groups of four or fewer. A tour name does not override that rule. From our hostel at Warmoesstraat 87, you can plan an educational visit to the neighbourhood, but confirm exactly what the provider offers and where it takes place.
What are the current guided-tour rules?
The City of Amsterdam’s guided-tour rules limit city-centre groups to 15 participants. Guides need an exemption for groups of more than four. Tours may operate between 08:00 and 22:00, and must avoid sex workers’ windows.
The rules also prohibit alcohol and drug use during a tour. Groups should not block entrances or busy bridges, and guides must not use amplified sound or shout. Check the municipality’s restricted-area maps and ask your provider how its route complies. We have removed the earlier article’s suggestion that a standard evening tour necessarily includes coffeeshops or a museum.
Is there an educational alternative to a guided walk?
The Prostitution Information Center’s Walk ‘N Talk offers information about the neighbourhood and the issues sex workers face. Despite its name, PIC explicitly says that it cannot walk with visitors through the district under the rules. It provides a map and information for independent exploration instead.
On 12 September 2026, PIC listed English sessions on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 17:00, starting at Enge Kerksteeg 3. The listed duration was about 1.5 hours and the price €25 per person. Check availability and the current format directly before going. PIC says these sessions are almost always presented by sex workers from different backgrounds.
This offers a specific way to hear first-hand perspectives. It is an independent service, not a confirmed White Tulip tour or an included accommodation benefit.
What about Red Light Secrets?
Red Light Secrets is a separate museum at Oudezijds Achterburgwal 60H. Its ticket page lists a minimum age of 16 and states that the building is not wheelchair accessible. Check the museum’s own booking page for your date and final price; a walking-tour booking does not automatically include admission.
The museum FAQ estimates a visit at about 45 minutes and says there is no luggage storage. Arrange bags before arriving and contact the museum about access requirements. Its indoor visitor experience should not be confused with permission for a guided route past working windows.
What should you check before paying?
- Format: a guided route, an indoor talk, a museum visit or independent exploration with a map.
- Meeting point: the full address and arrival instructions. There is no single starting point for every tour.
- Inclusions: admission, language, group size and any extra charges.
- Conditions: age restrictions, cancellation terms, mobility requirements and the finish time.
Do not rely on the older article’s universal two-hour duration, 19:00 or 21:00 departures, or five-minute journey from our hostel. Those details depend on the actual service you book. Save its confirmation and contact details before setting out.
How can you visit respectfully?
Keep entrances clear, speak quietly and give residents and workers space. Do not photograph or film sex workers or their windows. If someone declines a conversation, respect that decision. Learning about the neighbourhood does not entitle visitors to personal information from people working there.
A regulated industry is not a guarantee that every worker or visitor is safe. We have removed that absolute claim from the earlier article. Choose information that recognises different experiences, and avoid treating people as exhibits.
