King’s Day Amsterdam Guide

Illustration accompanying our Amsterdam Kings Day guide

The next King’s Day is Tuesday 27 April 2027. We recommend choosing one main activity, arranging your accommodation and checking the event-day transport plan before travelling. Amsterdam’s orange celebrations include markets, gatherings and ticketed parties, but a previous year’s programme is not a reliable schedule for your visit.

When is King’s Day in Amsterdam?

The Dutch government’s holiday calendar confirms 27 April 2027, and I amsterdam’s event listing gives the same date. The evening before is commonly called King’s Night; check the date printed on each party ticket so you book the intended night.

Our earlier text incorrectly gave 27 April for the 2025 celebration. That edition was held on 26 April. Keep the year attached to any schedule you find, including old search results, videos and saved guides.

Choose your kind of celebration

  • Markets and neighbourhood atmosphere: choose a small area to explore on foot rather than trying to cross the entire centre repeatedly. Check the official market locations and times for your edition.
  • A music event: buy through the organiser or its authorised ticket seller. Confirm the venue, age limit, entry deadline, bag policy, re-entry rules and cancellation terms.
  • A boat outing: confirm the operator, boarding address, sailing time, passenger limit and inclusions. Seeing boats on a canal does not mean there is an organised parade you can join.
  • A quieter day: check neighbourhood events and opening hours for any indoor stop. Do not assume museums and other attractions follow their ordinary schedule.

We have not confirmed a 2027 lineup for the festivals named in our older version. Use the current event directory as a starting point and then verify the organiser’s own listing. A well-known square is not a guarantee of a stage, free concert or unrestricted entry.

Vrijmarkt does not mean anything goes

The vrijmarkt is associated with selling second-hand belongings, but it is not blanket permission to sell anywhere or offer any food and drink. Amsterdam’s official visitor advice points to separate rules for market locations, children’s markets and food or alcohol sales.

That page describes an earlier edition. Before setting up a stall, use the municipality’s current King’s Day information to check the rules that apply to your date and location. Our earlier statement that everyone could sell street food and crafts without restrictions was too broad.

As a visitor, keep some small cash for stalls that need it, ask before photographing sellers closely and leave entrances and passageways clear. We suggest carrying only what you need for the day; large bags are awkward in crowds and may not be allowed at ticketed venues.

Getting around from Warmoesstraat

We are at Warmoesstraat 87. Save that address and your intended meeting point on your phone before leaving. Agree on a simple fallback with friends if you become separated, and allow more time than an ordinary walking estimate.

GVB’s King’s Day transport page currently describes the 2026 edition. It shows why normal routes are unreliable on this holiday: that year included tram diversions and metro-station closures. Those details are context, not a confirmed 2027 service plan.

Use the GVB journey planner shortly before departure and again before returning. Check station entrances and walking sections as well as the line number. Our earlier promise of a ten-minute tram journey to Leidseplein should not be used for event-day planning.

Prepare for crowds and changing weather

Orange clothing is a familiar part of the celebration; comfortable shoes and a weather-appropriate layer matter too. Charge your phone, keep tickets accessible, protect valuables and decide where you can take a break. Follow staff and crowd-control directions, and move to another area if your intended route is too congested.

Check the current municipal and venue rules before bringing alcohol, glass, food or a large bag. For a boat booking, ask the operator about the applicable event restrictions instead of relying on an old general rental description. Early arrival may help your planning, but cannot guarantee a viewing spot or admission.

Your stay with us

Check available accommodation for your exact dates in our direct booking system. Use code HOSTELAMSTERDAM and review the available rate, final total and cancellation conditions. We cannot guarantee that a particular room type will still be available.

Our booking terms confirm check-in from 14:00, checkout at 10:00 and 24-hour reception. Bed linen and towels are provided. We do not offer luggage storage after checkout, so arrange another option if you want to celebrate after leaving your room.

If your arrival is delayed, contact us at info@wittetulp.nl or +31 20 625 5974. A staffed reception does not replace the requirement to tell us about a delay; the terms specify a two-hour hold after the arrival time you supplied.

Earlier PDF and video

We retain the original illustration, PDF and video. Their older dates, festival claims, transport estimates and general luggage-storage advice are superseded by the information above. They are not a confirmed programme for the next celebration.
