Quick answer: For Amsterdam’s historic canals, look for a guided city kayak tour. For countryside canoeing, check a Waterland excursion; for independent rental, investigate Amsterdamse Bos. These are different outings with different meeting points and inclusions. We checked the provider information below in September 2026.

Guided kayaking on the city canals
Kayak in Amsterdam advertises guided trips for a maximum of six people and explicitly says it does not rent kayaks without a guide. Its published address is Leidsekade 28, 1016 CW Amsterdam. Use your booking instructions for the exact meeting arrangements.
The operator’s price page lists three choices:
| Tour | Published duration and departure | Price per person |
|---|---|---|
| Around Jordaan | 1 hour; 13:00 | €65 |
| Classic Canal Tour | 2 hours; 10:00 | €80 |
| Explorer Tour | 3 hours; 09:30 | €100 |
For two people, those listed prices give totals of €130, €160 and €200 respectively. Check the current quote and available date before payment. A published departure time does not guarantee a place on every day, and other times require discussion with the operator.
Choose a route by what you want to see
The tour descriptions say Around Jordaan passes the Anne Frank House and Wester Church Tower, while Classic Canal Tour includes the Seven Bridges and Amstel River. Those are views from a paddling route, not museum admission or promised stops inside attractions.
The same page describes meeting at a houseboat near Leidseplein, with a basic technique introduction if needed and practice on the water. Tell the operator about your experience before booking. We would choose the shorter outing for a tighter schedule and leave a separate buffer for getting there, preparation and changing afterwards.
What to bring and how weather affects the trip
Kayak in Amsterdam’s FAQ advises comfortable clothes that can get wet, a compact spare set and your own rainwear if needed. It provides life vests that participants must wear. You can bring a refillable bottle for water.
Its weather policy says heavy rain, strong winds or thunderstorms can lead to cancellation without charge; light rain can still allow a tour. That is an operator weather decision, not a general right for guests to cancel free of charge within 24 hours. Check the separate booking conditions before paying.
The FAQ also flags participation limits relating to balance, health, pregnancy and kayak fit. Read it and discuss any relevant concern with the operator in advance. We cannot promise that every visitor or every age group can participate. Ask separately about bags, valuables and any waterproof storage you need.
Countryside canoeing is a different trip
Wetlands Safari’s day-tour information describes an approximately five-hour guided canoe outing in Waterland, including public-bus transport, canoe, guide, drinks and lunch. It lists a Saturday 10:00 meeting inside Amsterdam Noord metro station near AH to Go, Termini 25, and a season running from early April through September 2026.
This is a countryside excursion, not a paddle through the central canal ring. Check the operator’s current availability and confirmation before travelling. Other Wetlands Safari products have different starting arrangements, so do not apply the day-tour meeting point to every tour.
We suggest comparing the whole outing rather than only hours on the water. A trip with transfers and lunch needs a different place in your schedule from a one-hour city paddle. Confirm exactly which inclusions apply to the product you choose.
Independent canoe rental in Amsterdamse Bos
Kanoverhuur Amsterdamse Bos lists canoe, pedal-boat and electric-boat hire at the Grote Speelweide by the pond. It offers online reservations. That location is in the forest, not a central Amsterdam canal departure.
Ask for the craft’s capacity, price for your hire period, required return time and permitted route. A rental does not imply that a guide accompanies you. Do not transfer city-tour inclusions, weather terms or minimum ages to a different rental business.
Before you reserve
- Match the outing to your group: agree whether you want historic canals, countryside or a forest setting.
- Check the full cost: party size, transport, hire duration and any equipment charges or deposit.
- Confirm suitability: experience, swimming ability, ages, language and any access needs.
- Keep the instructions: arrival time, meeting point, cancellation terms and the operator’s contact details.
We do not offer a blanket kayak-tour discount or guarantee refreshments across providers. Use the operator’s booking confirmation as your reference, and leave time to reach the correct location from our hostel.
