Dam Square Amsterdam Events and Landmarks

Archive Dam Square visitor-guide illustration from 2024

This retained 2024 illustration depicts an imagined Amsterdam scene, not a current photograph of Dam Square or an event announcement.

Dam Square is a useful starting point for exploring central Amsterdam from our White Tulip Hostel. You can see the Royal Palace, Nieuwe Kerk and National Monument from the public square without buying an attraction ticket. Going inside the Palace or an exhibition is a separate decision with its own price and opening calendar. We recommend choosing one indoor visit, then leaving time to explore the square on foot.

What is free on Dam Square, and what costs extra?

Walking around the square and looking at the buildings from outside normally costs nothing. Access can change during ceremonies or other events. Do not mistake free access to the square for free admission to every building around it.

Visitor options checked on 12 September 2026
Place Admission Planning note
Public square and exterior views No attraction ticket Follow any temporary access restrictions
Royal Palace interior Adult €13.50; student €9; ages 17 and under free Check the Palace calendar for public opening
World Press Photo at Nieuwe Kerk Adult €25; ages 12–17 and students €15; ages 11 and under free This exhibition runs until 27 September 2026

At these standard adult rates, two Palace tickets total €27; two World Press Photo tickets total €50. Visiting both costs €77 for two adults before food or other expenses. This calculation assumes no passes or discounts. A free outdoor visit remains a complete option if your priority is seeing the square rather than entering both venues.

Three landmarks to look for

Royal Palace

The building began as Amsterdam’s town hall and is now an official royal reception palace. Its public opening depends on the royal programme; it is not an attraction with guaranteed year-round daily access. The official Palace visitor page lists current dates, prices and the included audio tour. We have a separate Palace guide for a more detailed visit.

Nieuwe Kerk

Check the actual exhibition rather than assuming a general church ticket. The current World Press Photo Exhibition 2026 is open daily from 10:00 to 17:00 through 27 September. Its admission rules include free access with listed passes such as Museumkaart and I amsterdam City Card. These exhibition hours and benefits should not be carried forward to a later programme without checking.

National Monument

The monument is the focus of the annual National Remembrance ceremony. On 4 May at 20:00, the Netherlands observes two minutes of silence. The National Committee’s ceremony page explains its meaning and programme. Treat this as a moment of remembrance. Check the relevant year’s visitor instructions before attending; reservation arrangements from 2024 are not proof of the next ceremony’s rules.

Events: check the location as well as the date

Not every Amsterdam festival takes place on the Dam. In particular, the organiser lists the next TulipDay Amsterdam for 16 January 2027 at Museumplein. It is not a Dam Square event. Use the organiser’s updates when planning your trip.

We have not confirmed a forthcoming Dam Christmas-tree lighting date or a recurring carnival schedule. Do not make a booking around the old 2025 dates in earlier versions of this guide. Before travelling for an event, verify its venue, start time, ticket requirements and cancellation notices. Street performers may be present, but we cannot promise a performance on a particular visit.

A simple visit from White Tulip

Start from our hostel at Warmoesstraat 87 and set Dam Square as your walking destination. Our reception team can help with directions and free city maps. Use the map for your own pace rather than treating the old five-minute estimate as a guarantee.

For an unhurried outdoor stop, we suggest setting aside around 30–45 minutes for the buildings, monument and photographs. This is our planning suggestion, not an official tour duration. Add time separately if you book an exhibition. Keep any timed ticket accessible on your phone and leave a buffer for crowds and finding the entrance.

For accommodation, compare our room options and book through our direct booking system. Our confirmed code HOSTELAMSTERDAM applies to booking your hostel stay; check the displayed offer and conditions. It does not provide admission to the Palace or Nieuwe Kerk.

Original PDF and video

The original 2024 PDF brochure and video below remain available. Their suggestion that Palace admission is free is incorrect for standard adult tickets. Their ceremony arrangements and fixed walking time also describe earlier material. Use the updated information above and official venue pages for current planning.
