Amsterdam Escape Rooms Puzzle Adventure Guide

Quick answer: Choose an Amsterdam escape room by your team size, preferred language and appetite for scares. The four rooms below run for 60–90 minutes and have different player limits. We suggest checking those details before comparing headline prices. This guide uses provider information checked in September 2026.

Our original image, video and PDF reflect an earlier version. Use the current room details and booking links below rather than older claims about technology, prices or age suitability.

Four rooms to compare

This is a practical shortlist, not a claim that we have personally played or ranked every room in Amsterdam. The links lead to the actual operators.

Room Players and playing time What to check
Sherlocked: The Architect 2–6; 60 minutes A story-led mystery. Two-player bookings are restricted to weekdays on the operator’s current overview.
Sherlocked: The Vault 4–7; 80 minutes A heist with theatrical interaction. A couple cannot book it as a two-player game.
MyEscape.Club: The Curse 75 minutes; recommended 2–4 experienced players or 3–7 beginners English-language game with a 14+ label and a dark supernatural theme.
Amsterdam Catacombs 2–6; 90 minutes Horror with actors, darkness and flashing lights; the site labels it 16+.

Playing time is not the full outing: add the operator’s required arrival time, briefing and your journey. We would leave space before a dinner reservation rather than assume a 60-minute game means leaving exactly one hour after reaching the venue.

What the prices actually mean

The Architect advertises from €29 per person in a team of six. The Vault advertises from €35 in a team of seven. These are starting rates tied to those team sizes; multiplying them by two or four does not establish the price for a smaller group. Select your date, room and actual number of players to see the quote.

The Curse publishes a more detailed price grid. Four players cost €35 each Monday–Thursday or €38 each Friday–Sunday: team totals of €140 and €152. For two players, the listed rates are €45 and €50 each, giving totals of €90 and €100. Check the current booking price before paying. These examples exclude your transport, meals and drinks.

A lower per-person price can still mean a higher total bill. Decide who is definitely playing before you reserve. MyEscape.Club’s conditions say a smaller turnout does not receive the price difference back. Check cancellation and player-change terms with your chosen operator rather than assuming every venue follows the same policy.

Language, ages and how scary it is

Sherlocked’s room FAQs say the games are created in English and recommend at least one or two English speakers. The Architect can sometimes be played in Dutch on Wednesdays or Sundays, subject to a suitable host: arrange this first. Its room overview labels The Architect 12+ and The Vault 15+. Confirm supervision requirements when children are joining.

Catacombs is a horror choice, not a general family recommendation. Its age FAQ says 16+ with an adult present; any exception for younger children requires advance discussion with the operator and parents. Do not book for someone who dislikes scares on the assumption that all escape rooms are gentle puzzle games.

The Curse page specifically cautions against participation for people affected by panic attacks, claustrophobia or epilepsy. MyEscape.Club’s FAQ also mentions flashing lights and smoke effects in some scenarios. Ask the venue about the precise effects and any possible adjustments before buying; a general statement about accessibility is not enough to decide whether a particular room suits your group.

Go to the correct entrance

Sherlocked gives different starting points even though its games use the same building. The Architect starts at Damrak 247; The Vault starts at Q-Park Bijenkorf. Follow the instructions supplied with your booking rather than navigating only to the business name.

The Curse lists Weteringschans 187A, 1017 XE Amsterdam. Catacombs lists Haarlemmerstraat 124–126. Put the exact address into your journey planner and check the required arrival time in your confirmation. We are at Warmoesstraat 87, so these venues involve separate journeys from our hostel.

Planning for a bigger group

Do not add extra people beyond a room’s capacity. For eight friends, for example, none of the four listed rooms accommodates everyone in one team. Ask about separate rooms and compatible start times before paying for several bookings.

Catacombs explicitly says multiple groups cannot play simultaneously. Splitting eight people into two bookings therefore does not mean they can start together. For an outing with several teams, agree a meeting point and allow for different finishing times.

We suggest choosing the game before planning drinks. Sherlocked and MyEscape.Club both state that intoxicated players can be refused. During play, share discoveries with teammates and follow the host’s instructions; do not force a prop because you think it must open.

Arrange your stay and luggage

Our booking terms confirm check-out at 10:00 and no luggage storage after check-out. If your game is on departure day, arrange another luggage option first and ask the venue whether it can accommodate your bags. Our reception is open 24 hours.

Check accommodation availability directly with us and use our confirmed code HOSTELAMSTERDAM. Review the offer for your dates. It concerns accommodation, not escape-room tickets or guaranteed activity discounts.
