For a first visit to Amsterdam Noord, choose one area before boarding the ferry: Buiksloterweg for Eye and A’DAM LOOKOUT, or NDSM for street art and STRAAT Museum. We suggest one main attraction plus a meal or waterfront walk. Noord is a district, not a single attraction where every stop sits beside the same landing.

Choose the right free ferry from Centraal
Walk from our hostel at Warmoesstraat 87 to the IJ side behind Amsterdam Centraal. GVB lists free IJ ferry connections, including F3 to Buiksloterweg and F4 to NDSM. Both are listed as day-and-night services, but frequency and disruptions vary. Check the live GVB planner for your return as well.

Allow time for the walk to the terminal and a missed departure. If combining both areas, check the route between them before booking consecutive timed activities.
Eye: choose an exhibition or a film
Eye is at IJpromenade 1. Its visitor information lists standard exhibition admission at €16.50 and a standard film ticket at €13.50, with supplements possible for some screenings. These are different tickets: decide which experience you want.
The exhibition normally opens Tuesday–Sunday, 10:00–19:00. Outside school holidays, it is closed on Mondays, when the restaurant and box office open at 18:00; the restaurant serves drinks only that evening. Check exhibition changeover dates too. For a film, arrive before the advertised start: Eye does not admit latecomers once the feature begins.
For an international visitor, checking the film’s spoken language and subtitles is as important as choosing the title. A riverside drink can be a separate plan from watching a film; use Eye’s own restaurant details for your date.
A’DAM LOOKOUT: budget for optional activities
The LOOKOUT FAQ lists online admission at €16.50. The swing costs an additional €7.50, and the Amsterdam VR Ride also costs €7.50 extra. The VR experience is a simulated rollercoaster, not a real flight or skydiving session.
Admission plus a swing therefore totals €24 per person at those listed rates, or €48 for two. Check package pricing before paying. Standard opening is daily 10:00–22:00, with last admission at 21:00. For the swing, read the operator’s suitability restrictions and booking instructions; the minimum height is 1.20 m.
Our suggestion is to decide whether the view alone is what you want before adding the thrill activities. A skyline stop and a long museum visit make different demands on your afternoon and budget.
NDSM: art first, food afterwards
At NDSM, combine outdoor exploration with a paid STRAAT visit if street art is your priority. Our updated STRAAT guide covers the ticket categories, opening exceptions and free audio tour. Outdoor works and events change, so do not assume an old photograph or market listing describes what is happening today.
For a food stop, use Pllek’s own website to check its menu, reservations and programme. The previous article’s Pllek and Hangar links led to hostel rooms; they were not restaurant information. We recommend checking the actual venue before making dinner the fixed end of your route.
Three ways to keep the day manageable
- Lower-cost outing: take a free ferry, enjoy the waterfront and set your own food budget. Museum and tower entry remain separate.
- Film and views: choose Buiksloterweg, make Eye or LOOKOUT the booked stop and leave the rest flexible.
- Street-art afternoon: choose NDSM, confirm STRAAT’s hours and add food afterwards rather than rushing back for another timed attraction.
