For an elevated view of Amsterdam at OBA Oosterdok, head towards restaurant Babel on the seventh floor. The important seasonal detail is that its outdoor terrace is closed from November to March. We suggest checking the restaurant and library information separately before making a trip specifically for the terrace.
Babel and the outdoor terrace
OBA’s food and drink page places Babel on the seventh floor and confirms the November-to-March terrace closure. It describes coffee, lunch and evening food, with products from suppliers in different Amsterdam neighbourhoods. That supports planning a café or restaurant stop, not assuming year-round access to an outdoor observation deck.
The same page lists a 15% discount on orders for OBA members showing their membership card and 10% for visitors showing an OBA activity e-ticket. Check the applicable terms with staff; we would not assume those offers can be combined. Our hostel accommodation code is unrelated to either offer.
If the outdoor view is your main reason to visit, check on the day whether the terrace is open. Outside the winter closure, weather or operational circumstances can still affect your plans. We have not confirmed a separate daily terrace or kitchen timetable, so the library’s closing time should not be used as a last-order time.
Library opening hours and address
The OBA Oosterdok location page gives the address as Oosterdokskade 143, 1011 DL Amsterdam. Its regular hours are:
- Monday–Friday: 08:00–22:00.
- Saturday–Sunday: 10:00–20:00.
Holiday exceptions matter. OBA’s 2026 holiday notice says branches close at 17:00 on 24 and 31 December, and are closed on 25–26 December 2026 and 1 January 2027. Check the date-specific listing again before travelling.
For a winter visit, plan around the indoor library and confirm Babel’s service rather than relying on an outdoor sunset stop. In summer, compare the time of your visit with the opening information instead of assuming the view remains available until after dark.
What else is inside?
OBA’s English visitor information welcomes visitors as well as residents. It describes seven floors with books, magazines, study spaces and meeting rooms, with free Wi-Fi throughout the building. The location page also lists exhibitions, a children’s department with a Maakplaats and the OBA Theater on the seventh floor.
We suggest choosing a specific activity from OBA’s current programme if you want a talk, workshop or performance. Check its language, start time, booking requirement and price individually. Our older claim that most cultural activities were free was too general.
This is a working library. Keep calls and conversations appropriate to the area, respect occupied study places and follow staff guidance when taking photographs. If you need step-free access or a particular facility, confirm the route and its availability with OBA before a special journey; our former description of universal accessibility was broader than the information we had checked.
Getting there from our hostel
We are at Warmoesstraat 87. Use Oosterdokskade 143 as your destination in a live walking map and allow time to reach the seventh floor after arriving. The previous article’s bus 22 shortcut and fixed fifteen-minute estimate should not replace current directions.
For a flexible outing, we would combine a browse in the library with a drink or meal at Babel if it is serving. Keep the outdoor terrace as an option that depends on the season, rather than the only reason for your visit.
