For a Volendam day trip from our hostel, we suggest the harbour, one historical stop and time for lunch. Add Marken only if the ferry schedule leaves enough time to return comfortably. Volendam is on the Markermeer, outside Amsterdam, so regional transport and walking time belong in your plan.
Getting to Volendam from Amsterdam
LocalBus lists bus 316 from Amsterdam Centraal towards Volendam, with Monnickendam on the route. We are at Warmoesstraat 87; plan your walk to the departure point separately and check the live service before leaving. This is a regular bus journey, not a guided excursion.
Check the arrival stop carefully. The museum’s current access notice says roadworks have temporarily closed the Zeestraat/Centrum stop. It directs visitors to Weegschaalstraat/Centrum, signed as Centrum, and then along the marked walking route. Check whether that diversion still applies on your travel date.
The same notice says the AMVO car park is reached via Bokkingstraat during the works. Its blue-zone parking limit is 1.5 hours with a parking disc. If you intend to stay longer, check a suitable longer-stay car park rather than assuming all central parking is unrestricted.
A harbour walk with some local history
Start with De Dijk and the harbour, then leave time to look beyond the waterfront shops. We suggest choosing a historical walk or museum instead of treating the whole village as a quick costume-photo stop. Respect residents’ doors and windows when taking photographs in the smaller streets.
Laag Holland’s Burgerpad listing describes a roughly two-hour walk costing €3, with access to a digital historical portal. Signs, photographs, paintings and stories explain the village along the route. It can be walked daily; check the linked purchase instructions before setting out.
That makes the Burgerpad a substantial part of the day, not a five-minute detour. We would pair it with a relaxed harbour lunch and leave a second destination for another visit if you prefer a slower pace.
Volendams Museum for an indoor stop
The Volendams Museum is at Zeestraat 41 and currently lists daily opening from 10:00 to 17:00. It is wheelchair accessible. This gives you an indoor option when the waterfront weather is less inviting.
The museum’s collection and exhibition page includes traditional local life, music history and the remarkable cigar-band mosaics, made using 11.5 million bands. Its “Onderbroken tijd” exhibition marks 25 years since the 2001 New Year’s fire, with an emphasis on loss, recovery and the community.
For admission, use the museum’s current ticket checkout or ask the desk. Its prices page currently contains conflicting tariff sections, so we would not use the lower figure as a guaranteed price. Check the appropriate age category and any card entitlement before paying.
Should you add the boat to Marken?
The Volendam Marken Express describes a crossing of about 30 minutes, with departures normally every 45 minutes. Times can change. Check both directions before buying, including your intended return departure.
The operator says to redeem the confirmation at the ticket booth at Haven 39 in Volendam or Havenbuurt 19 in Marken. Tickets cannot be cancelled. Children through age three travel free, ages four to eleven have a child rate, and bicycles or scooters need an additional ticket. Confirm the current fare and whether you need a single or return journey.
We would choose Marken for a fuller day with time to explore after landing. If your main interest is Volendam’s streets and museum, staying in one place avoids turning the afternoon into a sequence of connections.
