Quick answer: We recommend Westerpark for a park walk combined with the former gasworks buildings at Westergas. The public park is always open to walkers and cyclists, while cinemas, restaurants and events have separate hours and charges. Sunday Market normally runs on the first Sunday of the month, 12:00–18:00, with free admission. Check its calendar before planning around it.

Westerpark and Westergas: what is the difference?
Westerpark is the wider green area in Amsterdam West. Westergas is the cultural site among the former gasworks buildings inside it. A walk through the park and a ticketed event at a specific building are different visits: a festival ticket is not required just to plan an ordinary park walk, and the park’s opening hours do not mean every building is open.
The municipality’s Westerpark information also describes the wider area, including nature gardens, allotments and Westerpark West. The latter is a separate part of the larger area. We would not plan a first visit around residential development claims or expect a visitor attraction at every address labelled Westerpark.
A simple plan for a few hours
Our suggested plan is to start with a walk, pause for food or a drink, then choose one cultural stop. Allow extra time for the journey and any booking. This is a flexible itinerary rather than a scheduled tour.
- Dry weather: enjoy the paths and green space, then look around the Westergas buildings. Bring a picnic if you want control over your spending.
- Market day: leave time to browse the makers’ stalls before choosing food. Admission is free, but purchases are separate.
- Wet weather: check a cinema screening in advance. An indoor plan needs its own opening-time and ticket check.
We suggest choosing a quieter day if a relaxed walk is your priority. A large event can affect access to parts of the site; follow temporary signs and barriers.
When is Sunday Market at Westergas?
The market organiser lists Pazzanistraat 33 and regular hours of 12:00–18:00 on the first Sunday of each month. Admission is free. It is a makers’ market with items such as ceramics, jewellery, textiles and illustrations, with food also available.
At our September 2026 check, the calendar listed 4 October, 1 November and 6 December, plus an additional 20 December edition. Use the live calendar for your trip: the extra edition is a useful reminder that the monthly pattern is not the complete schedule. Do not expect this market every weekend.
Het Ketelhuis for a film or a restobar stop
Het Ketelhuis is at Pazzanistraat 4, a different address from the market. Its website lists opening from 10:00 and a film/restobar operation until 01:00. The box office is card-only. Check the actual screening time, language, subtitles and ticket price before buying; these depend on the film and session.
The restobar offers coffee, lunch, dinner and drinks. A cinema ticket does not establish that a meal is included or reserve a table. If you need step-free access or particular seating, use the cinema’s accessibility information before booking rather than assuming that outdoor park access describes the building.
Toilets, picnics and practical park rules
The municipality lists public toilets at De Parkwachter, the kiosk beside the tennis courts, open 08:30–17:00. Plan around those hours rather than assuming public toilets remain available whenever the park is open.
Barbecuing is permitted in Westerpark except on sports fields; fixed barbecue spots are also available. The city’s barbecue rules require protecting the grass from scorching and clearing away waste afterwards. Check signs on arrival and leave the site clean.
Getting there from our hostel
We are at Warmoesstraat 87 in the city centre. For public transport, the market’s travel directions name bus 21 from Central Station to Van Hallstraat/Westergasfabriek. Check a live journey planner for your departure, stop and disruptions; we do not promise a fixed door-to-door time.
Set your destination to the exact venue if you have tickets. Pazzanistraat 4 for the cinema and Pazzanistraat 33 for the market are more useful than a general park marker. If walking or cycling, include time to find the entrance and park your bicycle before an event.
