We recommend planning an Alkmaar Cheese Market day trip around the market calendar first, then arranging your train journey from Amsterdam. The traditional cheese-carrying spectacle takes place at Waagplein in Alkmaar on scheduled dates; it is not a daily market. Alkmaar Cheese Market dates in 2026
The official 2026 calendar, checked on 12 September, lists Friday markets from 27 March to 25 September, 10:00–13:00. The remaining Friday dates this season are 18 and 25 September. Tuesday evening markets ran during July and August from 19:00 to 21:00; that evening programme has finished for 2026.

What you can see at the market
The organiser describes cheese carriers moving the cheeses, weighing and traditional trading. These demonstrations are the reason to choose a market morning rather than arriving later in the afternoon. We suggest reaching the square before the advertised start, allowing time to find a viewing position.
Do not assume a visit includes a tasting package or a new exhibition. Ask individual sellers about samples and prices. If you want an indoor explanation of cheesemaking, plan a separate visit to the Cheese Museum rather than relying on the unconfirmed “new 2025 exhibits” described in our earlier guide.
Getting to Alkmaar from Amsterdam
The organiser’s travel page describes a direct train from Amsterdam Centraal taking about 35 minutes, followed by roughly 15 minutes on foot to Waagplein. Treat these as planning estimates. Check NS for your date, departure, fare and engineering works.
The complete journey from our hostel also includes getting to Centraal, waiting for the train and finding your way in Alkmaar. Avoid selecting a train that leaves no buffer before the market ends. We suggest making the market your morning activity, then leaving the afternoon flexible for lunch and the old town.
Cheese Museum: a separate indoor visit
The museum’s official visitor page lists online admission at €7 for adults and €3 for children aged 4–12, with free entry for Museumkaart holders. Two adults therefore pay €14 at the listed online rate; adding one child aged 4–12 brings the total to €17. Transport, food and purchases are separate.
Use the museum’s calendar to check opening for your date. The market and museum have different schedules: a museum visit does not mean the outdoor cheese demonstration will also be running.
Accessibility and comfort
The market accessibility page says the area is largely accessible. Visitors using wheelchairs or with reduced mobility can ask at the VVV by the fence about seating with one companion, subject to space. Seats are not guaranteed. The organiser also warns that the market is busy and offers no dedicated quiet zones.
Allow extra time if you need a particular viewing position or a slower walk from the station. Check the linked accessibility information for toilet locations and facilities before leaving Amsterdam.
